Magical Art Monday: Kelly Morgen

Kelly Morgen does more than just play with metals, she creates breathtaking works of art out of precious metals. How did she learn to make such amazing pieces of art?

I was trained in Florence, Italy by a master goldsmith, where I learned all the essentials of metalsmithing. I then completed my studies under the tutelage of Cherokee silversmith and shaman Heyoka Merrifield, while living in rural Montana. I craft every single element of every piece by hand, following the ancient artisan methods of the famous Italian jewelers and my own ideas and inspirations. I use only the most precious of metals (sterling silver and 18k gold) in my work, as I feel this creates a much more powerful piece. Each piece is a unique and original work of art that can never be duplicated, and so will last a lifetime.

These are not just trinkets for costume jewelry, these are meant to last for a life-time and then be handed down to the next generation. You can find her work through the following links:

Magical Art Monday: Signs of Spirit

Signs of Spirit produce some truly amazing carvings! When you think of a wooden pentacle or Celtic knot, often the image we get in our heads is a a flat, simple cut out. Not so with this group!  There is a lot of personality in every piece!  This is a small excerpt from their website regarding the creation of their pieces:

Long ago I realized that carving is a form of meditation. I am burning these images into my consciousness 16 hours a day.

As an act of self defense, I made a decision to limit my carving to symbols evoking light, love, peace, exhilaration, freedom, liberty, ecstasy, and the creator of the universe. I spend my life focusing on positive symbols and meeting people that are attracted to them. It just gets better all the time.

Before our site was remade, we featured another one of their pieces that has since sold. Because of the great beauty of the piece, we are also including an image so you get an idea of the scope of what Signs of Spirit can do!

A fantastic crafter from out in Australia!  It was very difficult to choose a piece of hers to feature, but this one called our name.  This is one of many Earth Spirit Pendants.  On the Etsy site, she explains a bit more:

The Earthen Spirits, Nymphs, Angels, Elders, Pixies and other Forest Children are inspired by the hidden treasures in nature – the one’s you find only when you are quiet, still and patient. They represent being at one with nature. Each has her own unique personality, her own beauty, and her own treasures. These little beings are never ‘created’ me with a design in mind, they simply create themselves. Some are simple , some more extravagant – but each one is beautiful.

TRaewyn has a vast network of sites where you can learn more about her and the amazing work she does.  You can find more about her through the following links:

Magical Art Monday: Sleeping Gryphon

We’ve interviewed this wonderful Lady before.  She does a wide range of wood burnings from keepsake boxes to alter tiles and from runes to jewelry.  This is what she has to say about her work:

I enjoy creating what your heart desires.

I have been creating things since early in my life. Started with my grandmother when I was two sitting on her lap and helping her draw thread on needle points. Since then i have done just about everything. My favorite art is pyrography, I have been working on pieces for the past few years. Everything from harvesting wood for charms, amulets, and wood to the smell of the wood as I burn. I try to cater to all cultures and faiths, but what brings me the most pleasure is to create custom pieces. I want to make something for you that makes your jaw drop and your heart sing, not just something pretty for your altar. I have always wanted to own my own little shop and last year I decided to go for it. Sink or swim kinda move. I started with $40.00 and a wood burner given to me by a friend and we have grown from there. I have friends that volunteer to help me and our goal is to keep growing and providing inspirational and beautifully functional items for our clients. There is also no limit on what we will create. Christians, pagans, jewish, atheist, all religions and spiritual beliefs are welcome here, even though we make certain things only at request. Drop us a line and allow us to wow you! ~From Sleeping Gryphon Etsy

Creating in pyrography isn’t as easy as it may look.  It takes a lot of skill to create with such precision on such a textured surface.  You can find her work by following the links below!
